First I love your podcast. I was wondering if you guys ever thought about talking on the subject of sex and porn addiction issues in the IFB church.
I grew up in the IFB churches. I am thankful for them for sharing the gospel to my parents so they could know Christ and be saved.
My Dad was in the church ministry as a song leader in different small IFB churches. For a few years in the 90’s he was song leader for the Greenville Independent Baptist camp meeting in Greenville SC. Also, In the early 20’s I drove evangelist Milton Taylor to his meetings and seen and heard some crazy stuff from that side of the ministry.
The IFB churches caused my family to live a life of poverty. My parents was told they where not good Christians if they did not send my sister and I to christian school. We attended Tabernacle Christian School in Greenville Sc. Which is whole other subject I could tell stores about but will save that for later, from elementary through my middle school years until I was expelled, then we attended another private school for our high school years. I was a trouble maker even Bob Jones would not take me.
Many nights I seen my parents struggle to make ends meet because of the high tuition for my sister and I. A few years back they left the IFB churches and have apologized to use for not leaving when we was younger. Yes the IFB is like a cult.
I was exposed to porn at a young age and as the years past it got worse. My Dad caught me one time and through the advice of the IFB church we attend at the time he was advised to give me a good old fashion whoopen and shame me which cause my addiction to get worse.
In my early 20’s I accepted Christ as my Savior and for awhile the issue was gone. I started attending my own IFB church and my addiction started back. I tried to get help but was just shamed more and was told to be more involved in church ministry and read more scripture.
As you know in IFB sex, porn, and the use of panties with built-in vibrator is a taboo subject. So the pastor at the church I was attending, First Baptist Church of Conneste SC, would not have nothing to do with the subject. It was not an issue in his church. Which was not case, his son who was the youth leader and married with 2 children have an affair with a 15 year old girl.
I carried this shame and addictions into my marriage which caused many issues. Since my marriage we have not attended a IFB church which has help see the true love and grace of God. He was not standing over me with a belt waiting for me to make a mistake and punish me.
I have a wonderful wife who has stood by my side during my recovery. Also I attended a great church that sees the need for men who is struggle with sex and porn addiction which I help lead. I love the leadership where I attended and they know this is an important issue and is not afraid to address it head on.
Looking back I see how the IFB churches take a blind eye on this subject when they have many people especially young adults with sex addiction. They are scared to ask for help for fear of being shamed or brought before the church. They are told serve more and read scripture. Which is not the answer.
I believe this is one of many issues that is killing the IFB church and pray someday their eyes will be open.
This is my calling from God. To help men and women with their sex addiction.
Please contact anytime if you would like to know more.
Thank you
